At the end of WW2 the NSDAP (Nazi Party) was declared illigal and therefore it was also illiegal to wear any awards or badges displaying the swastika, Nazi Eagle or SS runes. On 26th July 1957 the West German government commissioned a new range of replacement awards to be worn by veterans, instead of the Nazi versions. The wearing of German awards of any kind won during WW2 remained illiegal in Eastern Germany.
